Commodore May 2020

Hello fellow sailors! It finally looks like we will be getting the club open later this month. Decisions are being made about how and what that will look like – and as we move in this direction, please know that our number one priority is the safety and welfare of our members. We will continue to follow the directives of our state and local officials in how we ease back into our social club setting, and we appreciate your patience and cooperation as we move forward. We will continue to communicate to the membership through our website, Facebook page and email, so stay tuned! THANK YOU TO OUR HEALTH CARE WORKERS! The leadership of the club would like to thank our ECSC members who are in the trenches working in the healthcare field during these unprecedented times. We are fortunate to have many nurses, doctors, and other medical professionals among our membership. We thank you for your hard work over the last several months. A special shout-out goes to Scott Douglas, John Koehne and Vicki Greenough for sharing their knowledge with the ECSC board and providing guidance to keep the club safe. Stay safe! Social May 2020

With spring finally here, we are all getting the itch to spend more time at the club, reuniting with fellow sailors, and participating in club functions. Unfortunately, our new friend, COVID, is causing us to take pause on our normal routines. In an effort to assure the safety and wellbeing of our club members, Mother’s Day Brunch and Memorial Day events will be cancelled for May. We will continue to evaluate the situation and determine how to move forward with our social gatherings throughout the season. We will follow the recommendations of the CDC and monitor the effects of the virus on Indiana. Again, the safety and wellbeing of our club members are extremely important to us so we will move forward with every precaution necessary to ensure our members have a healthy sailing season. As you gather at the club for some camaraderie, remember to practice the 6 foot social distancing guideline, wash or sanitize your hands, and try not to share your snacks unless you have a safe way to do so. Happy May to all sailors at the Eagle Creek Sailing Club. This virus has slowed down everything in our lives but things change and we usually make it through to the bright side no matter what. I will be getting a new air compressor this weekend and making it easier to turn on the water for the pressure washer. Mostly, I would like ask all members to try and get their boats in the water as soon as possible so that we can start getting back to a normalized schedule. I know many have been sticking to the stay at home orders, and that is just fine, but you can spend an hour or so putting your boat in to alleviate some congestion at the club. The work lot is pretty much full so any boats that can go in should go in, and if you need to work on your boat then we can designate a place close to power and water. Spring lines. Please use spring lines to keep your boat in position in your slip. I need to make this clear, it is not a good thing if your bow pulpit is hanging over the dock. People can bump into them as they are walking down the dock and get knocked into the water. Another thing I have seen are bows of boats getting chewed up by the docks in storms. Now, I would be sorry to see a boat get chewed up by the dock but I am more concerned with damage to our docks than the owner of the boat who doesn't understand the idea of spring lines. Also, all slip renters should be aware that any damage to your slip mate's boat must be reconciled. If you are not very good at docking a boat then go out to one of our permanent marks and practice motoring into that mark like it was a slip. Do it at different angles and slow speeds. If you do not have insurance on your boat then you are going to have to pay full price for repairs to others boats or our docks. Make sure your club stickers are in place on the Port side of your bow and visibly on your trailer. Getting your boat registered in Indiana is a good idea too. Also most importantly if for some reason you are willing to give up your wet slip or just want to sublease it this year please let Jane Schmidt know and you will be reimbursed the $385 for slip rental. Racing May 2020

Racers, I know the big question is when can we start racing? Our first Wednesday night race will be June 3rd … There will be no Spring Series, just a longer Summer Series. The new NOR will reflect this… Hopefully, the worst of this crazy world will be behind us by then. Thank you all for your patience and we look forward to seeing you all on the starting line next month… The new schedule will look like this: Flying Scott - June 13/14 Catalina 22 Tuning Seminar - June 20 ECSC Regatta – July 11 Mayor’s Cup - July 25/26 Indy 200 – Sept. 12 Governor’s Cup - Sept 19/20 ECSC Championship - Oct. 3 Hornback - Oct. 10 Purdue/IU Regatta - Oct. 17/18 Just because we are not racing, does not mean you can’t be out sailing…. Get those boats in the water and practice!!! Practice, practice, and practice…… :)  If I can be of assistance in anyway, just let me know. Talk to you soon, Marcus Rogers Racing Chair

Membership, The 2020 Membership Directory was mailed last week. New member applications continue to be submitted on our website at: ecsail.org. Hope we can all be out on the water soon If you have paid for a 2020 wet slip but feel like you don’t want to use it, please contact us. It can be subleased and your $385 will be returned to you. Safety and Education May 2020

It is with a heavy heart we share that the 2020 junior sailing camps have been cancelled. Gathering 40 kids together at any point this summer would pose too large a liability for the club. We have refunded everyone's money and hope to see them next year. The ECSC junior sailing team is adhering to the I-LYA and US Sailing guidelines and protocols for COVID19 safety.  Marion County is still under a stay-at-home order, so Junior Sailing has not had any official practices yet.  We will have more in a report in a few weeks. I-LYA has cancelled all travelers series in June.  Bayweek is also cancelled this year.  I have been working with I-LYA, lawyers, and insurance agents in figuring out a path forward. Sam and Olivia were supposed to have their level one training course in Cleveland, OH, June 1-4 but this has been postponed. We are hoping the Mentor Harbor Junior Olympics will still happen on July 11th/12th. US Sailing is pushing single-hand racing this year to adhere to the social distancing mandates.  This is easy for our laser team.  Technically they are allowing 420 racing if you race it single-handed with no jib... More to come in my report.

Publicity May 2020

Hi everyone! I recently updated our website to include a "Leadership" page so everyone can see who is in charge of each committee.  You will also find the current Board Members serving our wonderful club. ECSC Leadership: www.ecsail.org/leadership My next goal is to update our records of previous regatta and award winners. Below is a list of  the different regattas we host and the awards we give out at the end of each year. The website has a few different pages right now with old records of these winners, but my goal is to make a nice & neat, one-stop-shop to see all the previous winners.  We have to give credit to all the hard work put into each award!
  • Boat of the Year
  • Rick Ahrbecker Sailor of the Year
  • Sportsman Award
  • Mayors Cup Regatta
  • Governors Cup Regatta
  • Indy 200 Laser Regatta
  • Flying Scott Regatta
  • ECSC Regatta (with Beach Party)
  • Hornback Regatta
  • Wednesday Night Series - Spring, Summer, Fall
  • Sunday Series - Spring, Summer, Fall
Also, I made an Instagram account for our club (see below link and handle).  I'm hoping to post regularly on here with good photos from around the club.  I'd be happy to post your photos, too, if you send them to me at publicity@ecsail.org.  The two changing pictures on the front page of our website are actually random posts from this Instagram account.  So sending me photos could get them onto the front page of our website! @eaglecreeksailingclub www.instagram.com/eaglecreeksailingclub Hope to see everyone out on the water soon enough!
