420's sailing

Commodore May 2022

We have many different activities and areas for all members and their guests to enjoy. Please feel free to spend some time with family and friends at multiple different locations around the sailing club including the Upper Shelter, Lower Shelter, Racing Shelter, Captain's Corner, Bodish Bluff, and the Pirate Ship Playset. The Upper Shelter is, of course, our largest area that is covered in which we use for multiple events throughout the year. The upper shelter also houses our bathroom facilities along with shower amenities. Directly behind the upper shelter, new for the very first time, we have the Pirate Ship Playset for kids to play on and pretend they are sailing on the Eagle Ocean Sea - Arrrrg! Also new for the first time, behind the playset, we have Bodish Bluff, which is a new grassy area where you can play some games with family and friends while enjoying the sunshine. The Lower Shelter is our 2nd largest area that is covered and is a nice place to grill out and be closer to the action. The Racing Shelter is a covered area closest to the ramp and docks - a great place to hangout and converse with fellow members and racers. The Captain's Corner is the deck next to the beach and can make you feel like you are on some exotic beach vacation. That is a great place to get a tan and relax or have a picnic and enjoy the beach and the water. I encourage everyone to come out and enjoy all the amenities and activities this club has to offer. Please have fun and enjoy this wonderful sailing club, but please remember to be courteous to all of our members and their guests by following the General Rules of our club. Eagle Creek Sailing Club is a volunteer organization, so please keep that in mind. Also, if anyone would like to volunteer for a project or any number of our activities we have planned, don't hesitate to contact me (or any other chairperson). A few quick rules are: Always lock the main gate after dusk, even if other members are still at the sailing club because you never know when they're going to leave. If you have any big trash items (like pizza boxes), please dispose of them into the main dumpster. Boat trailer parking is not permitted in or outside of the car corral or in front of or next to the Captain's Corner. This is in effect between Mothers day and the Hornback regatta. After putting your boat into your wet slip, make sure to take your trailer up to the trailer lot to ease congestion for other members. Looking forward to a spectacular, fun-filled sailing season! I am so happy it has finally arrived! Ki Hickok ECSC Commodore

Social May 2022

Our Mother’s Day event was a great success! Thank you, Amy and Les Miller, for hosting and Susan Tennant for volunteering to help! And, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank our grill master, Tony Rice, for always serving up a good batch of eggs! It was great to see everyone again. We served approximately 75 people and the pavilion was alive with chatter and laughter. I do hope our club mothers enjoyed the beautiful day. We will be kicking off Memorial Day weekend by celebrating on SATURDAY EVENING, May 28th. This will be a pitch-in like the good ole days! Please remember that our four-legged friends should not be present during events in the pavilion. As mentioned in the last newsletter, we have a calendar full of fun and are seeking volunteers to host and help with our events. If you have an interest in supporting social events, please let us know. You will earn work credits that convert to cash off next year’s dues! Our immediate need is for our Memorial Day Celebrations. Below is our calendar of remaining events: Memorial Day Celebration – Saturday, May 28th from 6:00 Father’s Day Brunch – Sunday, June 19th from 11:30 Kids/Family Fun Day – Saturday, July 2nd, TBD Beach Party – Saturday, July 16th, TBD Labor Day Celebration – Saturday, September 3rd, from 6:00 Lobster Fest – Saturday, September 24th, TBD Chili Cookoff – Saturday, October 8th, TBD Final Bash – Saturday, November 5th, TBD Please feel free to contact Jen Curtis or me with any suggestions on how we can enhance your social experience. Secretary May 2022

At the April Board meeting, a new work-credit policy was approved. Members should know they may earn up to $200 in work credits (up from $150), that may be applied to the following year's annual dues and fees.  Standard work credits are based on $10 per hour of work. Also, the Board approved an update to the General Rules that members should be aware of.  Members with an assigned wet slip must have their boats in the wet slip and trailers in the upper trailer field by June 1st, unless other prior arrangements have been made with the Harbormaster.  The updated General Rules will be posted soon on the website. The next Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, June 14, 7:00 PM, at the upper shelter. If you are interested in serving on the Board of Directors with your name on the 2022 election ballot, please contact any member of the Board of Directors before September 1st to let them know you are interested in being nominated. -Rich Fox

Junior Program May 2022

Juniors would like to recognize Perry Cameron for his contribution of his time, skill, and ultimately the creation of a completely electronic 2022 Sailing Camp Registration.  We would not have been able to do this without his generous contribution.  Perry, thank you so much, we are truly grateful! Juniors are preparing for 3 weeks of Sailing Camp in June.  We will be welcoming a total of 60 campers to join us at ECSC for summer sailing and a whole lot of fun.  We have 3 counselors returning from last year (Olivia, Dunkin, and Julia) and we are welcoming 2 new ones (Nick & Drew) to the team.  Also, Matt and Olivia are getting into shape for the 2022 racing season.
JUNIOR SAILING CAMP 2022 All three class-weeks are filled up! Week 1: June 6 – 10 (12 – 18 years old) Week 2: June 20 – 24 (8 – 12 years old) Week 3: June 27 – July 1 (8 – 12 years old) But, check the Web Page, there might be some late opens. The 8-12 age group filled up within 2 weeks. We lost three instructors due to moving and/or going to college.  We require all instructors pass the US Sailing Level 1 Course, Instructors course, CPR, and Red Cross certificates.  Those that pass the first time, will have US Sailing Level 1 fees reimbursed.  They start at age 15 and also must have an Indiana Power Boat Permit. JUNIOR TEAM NEWS Oliva DeGrella and Matt Johnson will be out practicing each weekend in the month of May on Eagle Ocean.  Our first I-LYA  Traveler Series is on June 11th at Buckeye YC (just South/East of Columbus, Ohio).  It's flat water with a real nice club house and restaurant. The team will leave June 10th mid-day, camp overnight, and sail up to 5 races on Saturday. Matt Johnson should be finishing his US Sailing Level 1 course this weekend. Safety & Education May 2022

Safety and Education has been busy behind the scenes ordering First Aid supplies, scheduling fire extinguisher inspections, and working with the Coast Guard Auxiliary to plan Vessel Safety Checks. Lots of fun educational programming is in the works too! Vessel Safety Checks With a Vessel Safety Check, you will have the peace of mind that your boat meets federal safety standards and that in an emergency, you will have the necessary equipment to save lives and summon help. In many cases, boating insurance agencies offer discounts for vessels which undergo a Vessel Safety Check every year. If your boat does not pass, no citation is issued at that time. Instead, you are provided a written report on how to correct any discrepancies. As soon as a date is confirmed for this Safety Check by the Coast Guard, it will be shared via email, Facebook, and flyers at the club. First Aid Kits First Aid kits will be fully stocked by May 13th. A map of first aid kit locations will be shared. Yoga Whether you are a cruiser or a racer, strength and balance are vital for performance and safety when aboard. Free yoga classes will be held every Saturday at 10am beginning June 4th. More info to come. ______________________________________________________________________

Racing May 2022

Racers and Non-Racers, Dedicated Race Committee We are excited about the great start we've had in establishing a Dedicated Race Committee at ECSC.  Three Wednesday night races have been run so far with this new program and we've had great participation by our new PRO (Primary Racing Officer) team who have been running these races (and learning to do it well!). The new PRO's are: R Tom Moore John Anderson Linda Hukill John Thompson Alternate PRO's: Jerry Brickley Charles Maiers Les Miller A special thanks to Tom Moore in getting this program off the ground. Tom has been the PRO for these initial races and has been helping the other PRO's get up to speed with our specific ECSC process. Thank you to Geoff Endris, as well, who taught an initial course on Race Management and has remained a continuous advisor to us. We couldn’t be more excited about the talent, skills and enthusiasm these volunteers have for the program. This new system and focused talent should bring many improvements to racing at ECSC.  I hope you will give a strong welcome to these new volunteers and share feedback with them often. Upcoming Mayor’s Cup Regatta - May 21 & 22 The Mayor’s Cup Regatta is coming up quick. The regatta will take place on  May 21st and 22nd.  The NOR, SI and Registration form are posted on the racing page of the ECSC website (click here).  We need racers to sign up as early as possible to help us prepare trophies, awards and food for your enjoyment.  Whether it is your 10th regatta or your very first regatta, I hope you will join us!  We very much welcome beginners to these events and will do all we can to help you learn.  Volunteers are still needed to assist on the race committee and support functions of the event.  This is a good way to earn work credits that help pay for your membership dues the next year.  Please get on the Racing page of our ECSC website and click the SignUp Genius icon to sign up to for racing or non-racing volunteer activities at this event. Volunteering for Racing Activities throughout the Year There are many racing activities and events planned this year.  A schedule for all of them is posted on the ECSC Racing page of our website.  ECSC's normal racers participate in these but we are particularly interested in providing opportunities for non-racers to come out, observe, and become more familiar with racing.  One way to do that is to encourage non-racers to volunteer on race committee or to help with other pre- or post- race activities.  We know members that enjoy just being around the racing activities, while not racing themselves.  We hope that many non-racers will volunteer by going to the SignUp Genius on the ECSC Racing page and start enjoying their time with us!  Work Credits that help pay for your membership dues the next year will also be earned. This SignUp Genius site has just opened up so many slots are available to fit any schedule. We hope to see you soon!   John Kohne       Nancy Goff Racing Chairs
