Ahoy ECSC Members and friends, The Dog Days of Summer (August) are upon us.  Our 50th Anniversary celebrations during July were a fantastic club event.  Congrats to all who were involved to make this week such a special week for our club. I was sorry to miss out on these events as I was racing with my big boat crews on Lake Michigan and Lake Huron for the annual Mac-race circuit. It seems we had at least four other members also racing the 333 mile Chicago to Mackinac race. This got me thinking about how so many of our members represent Eagle Creek Sailing Club all over the country and even the world. Just last weekend I had the honor of joining team "Still the One" (Chuck and Nancy Goff's S2 7.9) at the Lake Huron Championships. It has been phenomenal to watch their growth from non-sailors (just 4 or 5 years ago) to seasoned sailors,  taking their boat on the road to a championship level regatta.  This is a testament to the community atmosphere that we have developed at ECSC. Our greatest surprise of the weekend happened on the shoulder of northbound I-69 while fixing a blowout on the S2 trailer.  Geoff Endris popped out of his car and asked if we needed a hand. It seems Geoff was on his way to Lake Erie to work as Principal Race Officer for the I-LYA Bayweek regatta.  ECSC Member, Marcus Rogers is a member of the executive committee of the J24 national Association and recently won the J24 class at  Cleveland Race Week. ECSC Member, Rich Fox has served the Catalina 22 national Association for many years and is currently the editor and Webmaster for their National Association. Our former Junior Sailors have represented collegiate teams across the country and many continue to race and sail all over the country. Inactive member  and former Junior Laser racer Tyler Andrews and his wife Carrie are the current builders of the Flying Scot. Inactive member Jim Grant and his family are the founders and owners of the Sailrite company in Northern Indiana. We have members and inactive members with cruising boats all over the world living their dreams the right way. The list goes on and on and on. ECSC may have its home on smallish Eagle Ocean,  but our reach is definitely far and wide. So, next time you are away at a yacht club or regatta far far away,  wear your ECSC hat or shirt and spread the warmth of ECSC.   Rick Graef Publicity

Grounds Committee Report A big thank you and shout out to Ron Anderson, our grounds/maintenance person for his hard work getting our club ship-shape. He showed his willingness to jump in the deep end of the pool when, for his first time on a sailboat, joined Bob Hickock on Spontaneous Combustion for a very windy Sunday during the Mayor’s Cup Regatta. He got to see firsthand what flying the laundry means!  And he came back! In addition to keeping up the grounds and shelters, mowing the grass and working with the plumbers to get the septic pump and system repaired and in good order he has also finished the following projects this past month:

• Replaced the garbage disposal in the upper shelter sink
• Power-washed the concrete outside of the restrooms
• Mulched and replaced borders for the flower beds
• Replaced the exhaust fan in the men’s bathroom
• Placed non-skid on the steps leading up to the upper shelter
• Graded the gravel road up the hill

Projects that are upcoming are as follows:

• Assisting the Harbormaster in getting trailers up to the top of the hill
• Replacing the counter-top, sinks and faucets in the men’s bathrooms
• Working with the Harbormaster to replace the roping in the parking lot
• Removing the log pile along the shore below the upper shelter (this will be relocated to the camping area for use at the firepit)
• Helping to build flower beds at the lower (camping) shelter
• Power-washing and painting our sheds and outbuildings
• Weeding the boat parking areas
• Assisting the 50^th Committee in getting ready for our celebration
• Continuing to work on dock maintenance

For those of you who don’t know me yet, my name is Nan Schulze and I am currently serving as your Vice-Commodore. I sail Dutch Mob, a J-24, and have been very excited to organize this group to provide the ladies of our club some fun of our own!  We have had a small group of women who have helped to get this up and running and I want to invite the rest of you to join us. You may have seen the fruits of our first order of business this season -our Adopt-a-Flowerbed project.  For their work credits, a number of ladies have been weeding, planting and will be maintaining different areas of the club to bring some beauty to our grounds.  Kate McMillan has been overseeing this project and had done a great job working with these volunteers. We are working on getting some signage out so we can recognize all of the great work these ladies are doing. We have some fun events planned for the club this summer.  We hope you will join in – they’re not all for ladies only!

• Saturday, June 8^th – Dock-Walk Beginning at 4:00 p.m. we invite you to host an open house at your boat.  We will provide balloons for your boat to identify you as a host.  All club members are invited to come walk the docks and enjoy the hospitality we know these ladies will provide.  This event is in conjunction with the Flying Scot Midwest District Regatta.  (RSVP for your ballons at nan.schulze@gmail.com)
• Saturday, June 29^th – Ladies’ Raft-Up 11:00 a.m.

Ahoy ECSC Sailors,

 

As I write this our website is being moved from on set of servers to another.  What does this mean to you?  Well,  you should notice no difference in the website once the move has been completed.   However,  during the move we have had to work to restore much of the data and documents that were uploaded this fall.  Please be patient as many of the documents for racing seem to have disappeared in the move.  Rest assured that the publicity department is working diligently to address this issue.  Thank go to Geoff Endris for working with our "web guy" to insure that everything is restored.  Also, we are working to add a security certificate to insure the browsing safety of our site.

Also,  please remember that all club emails will come with our burgee in the upper left corner. When in doubt please do not click on links in emails unless you see this burgee.  If in doubt,  feel free to email me at publicity@ecsail.org to confirm the authenticity of the email.

The Spring Work Party to Open the Club - Water or Not! April 13th 

Major projects which are in the works and moving forward - replacing the boat ramp and the mast hoist.  Commodore Geoff has put out a call for any club members with Civil Engineering experience to lend a hand.  More information will be provided as we move through these two projects.
We have signed a contract for the year with Ron Anderson, who will be our onsite maintenance person.  I will be scheduling a spring walk-through to assess our grounds and facilities, so you will have a chance to meet him then.  Thank you to those who have been involved in the process of accomplishing this task.  I believe we will all benefit from the return of a regular presence on the grounds to keep them well maintained throughout the season!
Lastly, and not really grounds related, we had our first planning meeting of the newly formed Eagle Creek Sailing Club Ladies Sailing Association.  We had about 12 women come out to talk about some great events that we will put together not only for the lady sailors, but for the club as a whole.  As these events get firmed up, we will keep you informed.  Thank you to those who were able to attend and are going to make this a great added benefit to our club.

The busy Publicity office of ECSC would love to get photos and stories from all of your winter sailing adventures. BVI, Antigua, Florida...I know that many of you have had some great adventures that your fellow club members would love to hear about.
