Three Classes:
Class 1 ~ 9-12 year old, on a Opti (a small 8' boat, perfect for the smaller, younger boy or girl).
Class 2 ~ 13-18 year old, on Laser Full rig (a 14' boat, perfect for the larger boy sailor).
Class 3 ~ 12-15 year old, Laser Radial rig (perfect for a young teenage girl or boy).
Eligibility:
Prospective sailors must be able to swim.
Must have a lift jacket, USCG type, with whistle attached to it.
Open to members and non-members (boys and girls).
Class size limited to 6-8 sailors!

Instructional Staff:
Our instructors are experienced sailors with small boat racing, All of our junior instructors are U.S. Sailing Certified Level 1, some are level 2 and 3's and Red Cross First Aid with CPR trained.
On the Water time:
Instruction are conducted in Laser: Full, Radial and 4.7 or with the Optimist rigs.
ECSC will supply the boats, sailors will supply other personal gear.
Classroom & Work-out Drills:
Work books, lots of jump rope, chin, push and set ups, light bench press, speed bag, punching bag and sailing games.
Notes:
Participation is based on the sailor and sole discretion of the team leader.
Minors must have a consent of parents, and an application and completed emergency treatment form,

[one_second]With spring just around the corner, activity is starting to pick-up in Safety & Education. We've gotten a few emails asking about lessons for inexperienced sailors looking to get into sailing. Yes the club does offer lessons on Saturday mornings during the sailing season. Lessons will be in the club's small single handed boats (Lasers). This gives the student the best overall experience and time with all of the controls of a sail boat. The lessons are taught by one of our US Sailing certified instructors. When the lessons start up in the spring I will update you here as far as contact information, etc. to make arrangements to attend.[/one_second][one_second]

Laser Sailing at Sail camp 2016[/one_second][one_second]
The Junior sailing camp is also starting to fill up. It is only March and we are already over half full for both weeks of the camp. If you are considering sending a young one to camp, I'd suggest that you get your registration in soon before all of the available spots fill-up. Ages are 8-18, see the website for more information. This year we have added the ability to register on-line. This should make things more convenient. It appears to be working smoothly, as most registrations have come in via the web. You can find the registration information and links here. If you prefer to mail your registration in, the form is available to download at the bottom of that same page.

The season starts with the Geist Spring Laser Regatta, where valuable experience is gained through racing against some of the best Laser sailors in the Midwest. This is typically a great season starter and the first time on the water in competition. This April regatta provides our team with great early season training while they wait for the first I-LYA Junior Regatta in June at Berlin Sailing Club. The season quickly gets busy in June with six regattas in the month! Mentor Harbor, Sandusky, Edgewater, and North Cape. Many miles are going to get put on the tow vehicles that month! July consists of three regattas with one of them being I-LYA Junior bay week. The I-LYA Junior season ends with two regattas in August at Hoover and Erie. In September, we will go to Lake Lemon for the Lake Lemon Regatta. This has become traditionally the last outing for the Juniors, and is always loads of fun.
The summer sailing camp plans are nearly finalized. The camps are scheduled for the week of June 19-23 and June 26-30th. The registration forms should be on-line shortly. Stay Tuned to the Sail Camp Page for more information. I was hoping to have them up by now, but ran into a little snag.

Hi ECSC Members,
There is not much going on on the Safety & Education department this time of year. We are wrapping up 2016 and looking toward 2017. Looking back at 2016 shows that it was quite productive.
One of our accomplishments this year was the construction of the new ECSC Junior Sailing school building. It turned out great! It has a pavilion area for teaching larger groups such as camp or our adult training classes, as well as an indoor area. Our intent is to be able to use the facility not only for camp, but also physical training of our junior sailors. It should also work well for chalk talks and video training regardless of the weather. Looking forward, we are planning on outfitting the structure with a few items to facilitate these activities.
2016 junior results were on par with expectations. As previously reported, Cameron Douglas finished 1st in the I-LYA Junior Traveler Series for the season and Reagan Lessick tied for 6th. Cam also finished 3rd at Junior Bay week in a very tight four day regatta consisting of 18 races. Cam has aged out of his Junior status at the end of this season and is off to college at Eckard in ST. Petersburg, Florida. Jon Schwartz competed in a limited schedule this year, but spent much time behind the scenes instructing possible future additions to the team.
Educationally, it was a good year for the Juniors as well. Cam earned his level 3 coaching license, Jon earned his level 2 license, and Reagan & Tina Williams completed their level 1 instructors licenses. ECSC's help of these young adults in furthering their education is critical to the success of our youth camps. ECSC has had a long history of employing US Sailing certified instructors as our youth camp instructors. Our youth program could not happen without these dedicated young ECSC juniors. There is also a long term benefit for both the good of the sport and the good of ECSC in having more people available to teach sailing.

The ECSC Junior team and staff had a fun outing at the Lake Lemon Regatta on Sept 24-25th. While the competition was real, the team usually treats this regatta as some relaxing and fun time together. Most of us camped at Bloomington Yacht Club for the weekend, and even Wayne competed there, as he has for over 30 years! Jon spent the weekend competing in the Finn, against Wayne, but Wayne remains undefeated against the Juniors. I guess he isn't showing them all his tricks! The two newest members of the Junior Team, Dunkin and Jack were also on hand to get experience sailing in their first regatta. Congrats boys! They got to see what it is really like to experience a regatta from start to finish, and they both did a great job! The boys have been training with Jon and were anxious to see what racing was really like, so this was a great introduction to them. They may be out at the Hornback, so if you see them be sure to say Hi! The Junior Team will now shift gears into prep for 2017 Thanks to Kenny, the site is graded for the new school shed area. The construction should start shortly . The new area is going to feature storage space, but the most anticipated feature is some combined teaching space for camp, and workout area for the rest of the time.

Congratulations are in order for ECSC's Cameron Douglas who finished his season well by finishing 1st in the I-LYA Junior Traveler Series! Out of a total of 51 entrants in the series, Cam scored a series low 10 points to take the win by four points. ECSC's Reagan Lessick finished in 7th after ending in a tie for 6th. Complete series results available here. Cameron did not sail the last two events due to leaving for college, we wish him well!

Reagan attended the last two I-LYA events at Erie Yacht Club and Berlin Yacht Club, finishing 3rd and 5th respectively, and earning her first race win in series competition. There are still a few regattas the Juniors will be attending to continue to develop their sailing skills and represent ECSC across the Midwest.
If you have been to the club recently, you may have noticed that one of the buildings at the junior school area has been torn down. This was the oldest building on the property and was almost falling down from age. We have removed that building to make way for its replacement. The new structure should include a covered area for instructing the kids at sailing camp in the summer. We are hoping this will end the need to conduct any camp activities under the main shelter, and all the campers will be centralized around the junior area. Stay tuned for updates as they happen.
